Big Mesa Farm, our little organic haven of five cultivated acres was started just a few years ago back in 2011. But the seed for this dream was planted back in a high school internship at Marin's own Green Gulch Zen Center. Caymin Ackerman is the heart and soul of this operation and thank goodness she attended that time at the Zen Center, for without her determination, there would be no Big Mesa Farm. While studying Oceanography at Humboldt State, she began her path on the wholesale market of farming. While working with friend and mentor, Blake Richard of Wild Rose Farm for 8 years she gained the knowledge and confidence to start a farm of her own in the county she grew up in and her family still lives. So after a small search she linked up with some local landowners and signed a lease!
Originally aiming for a few key crops, and selling solely wholesale, the farm's original crop was to be focused on cilantro. Quickly realizing she could do more, kales, lettuces and chard were added to the commodity list. Now here we are, 5 years later with at least a dozen or more crops on our farmers market tables including the addition of fresh cut flowers.
We specialize in leafy greens like lettuces, chard, kale, collards, and herbs like cilantro and parsley. And have special smaller crops including tomato, cabbages, strawberries, cucumbers, herbs, winter squash, onions, shallots, dandelion greens and more!
Last year one of our team players was given the opportunity of using a few beds to start us out in the fresh cut flowers scene. With a background in floral design, Mandy was over the moon with the chance to grow and design with her own selected blooms. Now Big Mesa Farm is producing many varieties of heirloom and specialty blooms for the wholesale and direct market. Although we miss her help on the veggie side of the farm, we are glad she's still here and her business, Mandalion Designs is blooming!
Every year we learn more. Every year we get a little better. Every year we are blessed. Thank you for taking the time to see our story. We feel lucky to live a life of hard work and to provide our community with such beautiful and nutritious food. It's important to us that we respect the land and the world we live in. Knowing who grows your food is a pretty special thing!
