About Big Mesa Farm

Caymin Ackerman | Owner Farmer

Big Mesa Farm is Certified Organic by CCOF and has been in operation since 2012. After seven years in Bolinas, Ca, we relocated to a small mountain valley in Comptche, Ca. We enjoy serving the broader community of Mendocino County and beyond. The farm is just half an hour from the Pacific Ocean and the beautiful beaches of the Mendocino Village.

As we grow here in Comptche, we look to form resilient and meaningful connections within our community. The existence of the local farm adds fun vibrancy to a place and can provide avenues for positive and healthy experiences. We believe this is a huge part of the value of the local farm, in addition to our array of organic and sustainably farmed produce!

We invite you to get to know our farm by coming and visiting us at the farmer’s markets and looking for our products at the local stores. We thank our community for all the support and certainly couldn’t do it without you!

Our Location

The property is a homestead dating back to the 1890’s where it was settled by a Finnish family by the name Matila. The house and barn built at this time are still standing and in use. Previous to that, the valley was frequented, and most likely inhabited by Pomo Natives, including the Jakulka tribe who called Comptche home (Thompson, 1973). The Valley is also reported to have been a stop along a historical stagecoach road from the inland town of Ukiah, Ca to the Pacific Coast. We feel extremely lucky to be the next in the long line of people who have lived and cared for this place that is home and now, a farm too.

The valley and hills include Redwoods, Doug Fir, Spruce, Valley Oak, Madrone, and native underbrush such as Manzanita, and Ceanothus. We feel very blessed to have landed in this location.

CROP PRODUCTION and THE FARM

We cultivate a 4 acre field, as well as 4 hoop-houses for growing in ground and one small propagation house.  We have been certified organic since 2012.  We use compost, practice lots of cover cropping and aim towards regenerative farming practices.  We feel blessed to be in stewardship for this time and take great care in our decisions that affect the land on which we depend.

The Farm is completely off grid, and 100% solar powered.  Water, electricity, and sewage are all managed on farm.  We maintain a small community of 3-7 people living here part or full time.  We are committed to moving towards a future less dependent on fossil fuels.  Ways that we are doing this is by use of induction cooking, passive solar and electric water heating, general efficiency, and even electric car charging capabilities!

VOLUNTEER

We are working on starting a volunteer day once a month.  Friday 9am last Friday of the month. If you are interested, please send an email to let us know!
